"The Municipality of Oeiras has defined a development model anchored on knowledge, science  and innovation to promote technology transfer to the market, as the basis for creating value, employment and wealth"

“The Municipality of Oeiras has defined a development model anchored on knowledge, science  and innovation to promote technology transfer to the market, as the basis for creating value, employment and wealth. Therefore, education and science are at the top of our political priorities. Creating the best conditions to academic institutions and companies, is one of our main concerns. This also implies creating and supporting initiatives that stimulate creativity and new ideas among scientists, combining scientific knowledge with entrepreneurship skills, such as management and leadership. The StartUp Research Program is all of that, and it is part of the Municipality of Oeiras’ collaborative agenda for Science and Innovation. We are proud of that.“

"We have developed this program especially for young researchers enthusiastic about science, new ideas, and discoveries, who would like to bridge their knowledge towards products and services that could benefit us all."

“We know it is not easy to imagine a “business idea” around science when one has been trained to perform fundamental research, but that is where this course can make a difference. The StartUp Research Program brings together the best venture experts from NOVA SBE and ground breaking scientists from ITQB NOVA, to train young researchers to recognize a good business opportunity when it emerges within the lab environment.

After this 11-week intensive training, Life Science researchers are expected to become more alert to innovation, and therefore further willing to explore sustainable translational opportunities.

You are at the frontline of knowledge creation and we wish to see you generating value from it for the benefit of society”

"A scientist is someone who dares to discover and expand the frontiers of knowledge"

” But for discoveries to have an impact on ordinary citizens, one will also have to be able to lead the process by which they are commercialized and transformed for the public benefit.

Thus, an increasing number of scientists are taking the lead in the processes of innovation, either as management executives in large companies or through the creation of their own Start-Ups.

It is the balanced combination of scientific spirit, leadership and management skills that makes the difference between a mere knowledge generator and someone capable of daring to impact the world by transforming new discoveries into impactful realities”.

"This program offers a solid understanding of Business Concepts, empowering participants to establish valuable partnerships with industry stakeholders"

“I have had the privilege of contributing to the development of the StartUp Research Program, designed specifically for life science scientists eager to explore entrepreneurial opportunities. This program offers a solid understanding of Business Concepts, empowering participants to establish valuable partnerships with industry stakeholders in sectors where life sciences can drive significant change. Participants bring their own project ideas, refining them through hands-on sessions, leading to a scientific innovation Bootcamp where they pitch to science and innovation managers, as well as industry stakeholders focused on health and sustainability. This course facilitates dialogue between researchers and industry professionals, equipping them with essential skills to manage business relationships and receive constructive feedback in a supportive setting. I am confident that it truly enables researchers to identify collaboration opportunities and synergies between the life sciences and industry more effectively.“
